EcoCult editor and sustainable fashion journalist Alden Wicker recently spoke to Vox on their Quick Hits podcast series about fashion’s environmental impact and why we don’t know exactly how bad it is. She covers false statistics in fashion, the need for policy change within the industry and how we can start to consume fashion more mindfully. “I advocate for people getting back to the root of why they enjoy fashion. When you start to slow down your purchases, you buy less and are just inherently more sustainable,” she says. Food for thought.

How to build a career in sustainable fashion

Young people are increasingly concerned with how to move towards a more sustainable future for our clothes and being part of the conversation. But how to affect real change? Journalist Megan Doyle hosted a panel discussion last month with fellow journalist Bel Jacobs, textile consultant Marzia Lanfranchi and By Rotation founder Eshita Kabra-Davies to discuss just that. Supported by Graduate Fashion Week, guests offered up practical advice and insight on how to link up your passion for sustainability with finding a job.

ELLE UK’s Mentor Scheme

ELLE UK’s mentoring scheme is aimed at anyone looking for help getting started on a career in fashion or publishing. Now in its second year, the programme will support ten individuals aged between 16 and 21. Successful applicants will have access to workshops and talks from leaders in the creative industry. They’ll also be matched with members of the magazine team who will be able to offer career guidance and support. The programme will run from June 2021 to June 2022 and is designed to fit around your work, university or caring responsibilities. Part of the programme’s aim is to promote marginalised voices and build a more inclusive fashion industry, which is why the ELLE team is actively looking to recruit students from non-fee paying schools. MR PORTER FUTURES Programme

Pioneering luxury menswear e-commerce platform MR PORTER is on the hunt for new and original perspectives on men’s style. Which is why they’ve just launched their FUTURES Programme, a global designer mentorship scheme for undiscovered talent. The initiative is designed to make the fashion industry more accessible (you don’t need previous experience in the industry or to have studied fashion at university to apply). It will guide three selected applicants through the process of designing, manufacturing and delivering their very own collections, which will then debut exclusively on MR PORTER.

Applications will be judged on the strength of their ideas and on how well they align with MR PORTER’s values of craftsmanship, discovery and inclusivity. Applicants will commit to a 12-month programme which will include one-on-one coaching and mentorship with the who’s who of the men’s fashion industry. Including menswear designer Nicholas Daley and Tatsuo Hino, director of leading Japanese lifestyle retailer Beams. Applications close on 6 June 2021.
