Cala Di Volpe: luxury for the mind

Written by Sakaynah Hunter

Cala Di Volpe conveys the notion that anything is possible. With fluid architecture that appears sculpted by the wind, it’s a vision of natural beauty, enlivened further by pastel colours and intricate detail that forms the perfect backdrop for out-of-the-box thinking. While it can be difficult to switch off from work, this slice of paradise, nestled along the Costa Smeralda coastline in northeast Sardinia, inspires rejuvenation, playfulness and ambition, making it a sanctuary for influencing a luxury mind.

Nature and design

The hotel eschews commercial design in favour of flowing structures that pay ode to nature, spliced with soft lines, jagged edges and irregular shapes. This includes elongated and delicate stairwells juxtaposed with concrete steps that reflect strength and fragility. Yet all the asymmetry fuses harmoniously.

It makes way for surprising accents, like the play on textiles by way of wood and stone carvings and stained glass. These are offset by rich tones of burnt and coral orange that are complemented by natural cobblestone and faded yellow, creating a Mediterranean mood.

Vault layouts, hidden lighting and sea-view balconies enhance the outdoor space, while bamboo roofing creates a quaint, boutique undertone. It forms in the resort’s charming island hut bedrooms that echo the sweeping elements of the exterior and lobby areas.

A long-stretched private beach, accessible by a quick complimentary boat ride from the main hotel, continues the sense of effortlessness and slow living.

Wellness for mind and body

With heritage that spans 140 years, the Shiseido spa is a haven for the finest Japanese skincare, hybridising eastern traditions and beliefs with western science and technology. Centred around the spirit of “Omotenashi”, which essentially means putting the client at the core of everything, it embraces a holistic approach to hospitality. Thus, it tantalises all four senses to create a full well-being experience. The inclusion of Kuroho, a scent heralded by Japanese aristocracy in the 9th century, promotes ultimate relaxation, ideal for soothing an overworked mind.

In addition, an indoor gym is complemented by an outdoor fitness space with a serene, picturesque bay view that inspires mind-body exercise, from sunrise Pilates to strength training.

Culinary experiences that inspire

Cala Di Volpe encourages slow eating, with locally sourced, nutritious foods that have less environmental impact.

Dine al fresco at the Barbecue restaurant for a relaxed culinary experience, where you can tuck into fresh seafood and meat while absorbing the hotel’s ambience.

Le Grand provides a fine dining experience, with a romantic setting offering panoramic views of the gardens and private harbour. The windows of the restaurant blur the outdoors and indoors, which denote endless possibilities.

Walk over the bridge of the hotel and into the enchanting Matsuhisa, for rich and flavourful Japanese cuisine, where dim lighting, exotic Nobu-style dishes and sophisticated music create a daring yet elegant mood. It nods to night-time glamour, aliveness after dark and mystic romance.

Head to the Italian-enriched Beefbar for barbecue flavours ideal for winding down for the evening after a day by the sea. Boasting a scenic bay view terrace, the Atrium bar fuels day-to-night reflection.
